So I don’t know if you guys know this, but I have that stupid 928 I want nothing to do with anymore. Well my plan had been to sell it and buy a motorcycle or a Z car because I am obsessed. Well I found a ‘74 260Z on Copart for really cheap in Seattle. That mean I would not have to smog it, but that also mean I can not inspect it and see if it is even worth checking out. Any Washington Oppos feel up to inspecting this thing for me? I know its rough, but that’s what I want. Something I can turn into my dream Z and beat on. Anyway, what does Oppo think?
I know it used to be green, but I like the purple and yellow. I can see rust repair and probably some rust left, but that’s what patches and a welder are for. All I am looking for right now is a running beater that I can use to stop putting miles on my GTO and slowly build something awesome. Especially after I sell the 928.

Well I can tell you where rust likes to hide on a Z. The dog legs can look just fine but they are usually rotting from the inside and need to be totally cut out and replaced (and I recommend reinforced). Any questions on Zs, let me know. I wouldn’t buy a 280 anyway, at the latest get an early 260. They get heavier and heavier and the engines are heavier and don’t do much better, the injection is crap too so I would carb them. That whole spoiler on the hatch there is a body work add on, I would really look at that and make sure it’s not rotting under there somewhere and leaking. None of that is original. I think it would better to spend a little more and find an earlier car in a bit better shape without custom body work done to it. The way they made that spoiler looks like it will just funnel water into the hatch crack and right onto a place that is known to leak or collect water and rust. I just had some minor damage on my Z and I’m swapping out the whole tailgate latch plate with a new panel.

This is a 260Z and my mom had one back in the day and I kinda want to build one to match her old car. She used to stunt car drive back in the day and has since regretted telling me stories of that car. I am aware of the rust issues, I have been studying these cars for a while trying to buy one....

It’s a late 260 though, so it’s more like a 280. The early 260's are more like a modified 240. Those cars weigh something like 300lbs more than a 240 or early 260.

But rust = weight reduction bro!! In all honesty I’m not to worried about it and I am sure I shouldn’t buy anything till I sell the 928, but less than $500 just makes me hhhhnnnnngggggg

I need to put the intake back on it and maybe do some maintenance and get rid of it. What else do you want to know?

How is this a later 260Z? I though the 260 was only available in the us for 1974 which was also the first year of them?

Besides the additional weight and no carbs, what’s so bad about 280z’s? This guy up the street from me has a green 280z that he doesn't drive and just refuses to sell. I'm gonna convince him one day..

Heavy all around, bigger engine but more mass, hideous bumpers, shit fuel injection. The new safety standards ruined jags too. Datsun beat Porsche for 70 and 71. It’s best to get 240 or first 6 months of 260.

Can’t the bumpers just be swapped though, saving a decent amount of weight? If it were my car i’d have a turbo L28 in it.

Well the bumpers can be backdated but I think there is some body work to completely finish it. Links and blog here:
http://www.zcar.com/forum/10-70-83…
Most of the weight is actually in the sheet metal, they thickened the whole body to comply. So the 240 or first six months of the 260 will be much lighter. Estimates on the total weight increase are over 400lbs by some estimates. The sheetmetal, bumpers, more reinforcement, steering rack is beefed up, suspension is heavier, more wiring adds up apparently , the diff is heavier but that’s one improvement that 240s switch to anyway. Basically between the actual body, safety and complexity that was added it gets pudgy. It went from a race car to a tourer, by the 280ZX it was firmly over that way. Sure the bumpers and anything else like the freaking million pound seatbelt retractors they added can be removed. Nothing beats a triple carbed, 5 speed swapped high revving 240 that is light. Pre 1974 Porsches had lots of trouble with them. Even better is a stroked 240. It’s the lightness, like Colin Chapman said. If someone wants to get a Z, now is the time to try and find a 240, people are always asking to buy mine.

Turbos are ok, but the triple carb experience is best for me, sounds like a WWII airplane.
